AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - An eastern Georgia man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a crash that left a woman paralyzed in December2010.
The Augusta Chronicle reports 29-year-old Bert Maxwell pleaded guilty Thursday to causing serious injury by vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and nine other misdemeanor driving offenses.
Because of three prior felony convictions, Assistant District Attorney Justin Jones filed a notice saying any sentence Maxwell was given would have to be served without the possibility of parole.
Authorities have said police were trying to pull Maxwell over because his tag light was out and when an officer asked for his license, Maxewll took off and lead police on a chase with speeds reaching over 100 mph. He crashed head on into the victim's car.
