FLORIDA (WTXL) -- As children head back to school, more than 40 states, including Florida, will implement the Common Core standards.

This will be the first time students all across the country will be learning from the same standards.

Here in Florida, schools began rolling out the program several years ago for kindergarten, first and second graders.

But for the 2014-2015 school year, the new Florida standards will be fully implemented for all grades.

"This is all about thinking, instead of students finding one right way to solve a problem to do a task, it’s looking at multiple ways of problem solving and critical thinking,” explained Sue Meckler, Director of Curriculum and Instruction of Sarasota County School District.

The standards will require students to do things like understand, interpret, and analyze problems; and according to Meckler, much of that will be done verbally.

"The students are going to be much more engaged in the learning process, working collaboratively, thinking together and learning from one another while the teacher facilitates and guides that learning process.”

But the new standards are being met with mixed feelings.
