Florida Officer Arrested for Hitting Handcuffed Suspect

Posted

SOUTH DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A South Daytona Beach police investigator has been charged with hitting a handcuffed suspect in a squad car.

Authorities say John Pickett was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor battery charge.

Prosecutors say the altercation took place last January with 26-year-old Parker Beasley, who was handcuffed in the back of another officer's patrol car.

A police report says Beasley became agitated while the police officer was talking to him, and Pickett hit the suspect in the head through a car window.

The officer told investigators that Beasley had spit on him and started lunging at him.
