Fla. officials urge peace after Zimmerman verdict

MIAMI (AP) - Angry protesters marched in Tallahassee. Miami churches planned a prayer vigil and local mayors and state leaders expressed disappointment with the verdict, but called for peace.

Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert said he drove around the city where Trayvon Martin grew up shortly after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman.

He urged residents to "defy the expectations of a world that would have us compound tragedy with tragedy."

U.S. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who pushed for Zimmerman's arrest, urged Martin's family to "pursue vindication" in a civil lawsuit.

In Tallahassee on Sunday, roughly 200 protesters, some wearing hoodies, sang songs of justice and carried signs that said "Racism is Not Dead."

Marchers walked from the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center before stopping on the steps of the historic Old Capitol building.
