TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments over whether state legislators must answer questions and turn over documents in a long-running political battle.
The high court on Monday will hear from lawyers representing the Legislature as well as lawyers representing groups that contend new districts for the state Senate and Congress violate the law.
A divided appeals court ruled earlier this year legislators enjoy a long-standing privilege that prevents them from having to testify about legislative business.
But a circuit judge ruled that citizens have a right to know why legislators made the decisions they did while drawing new districts in 2012.
The decision by the Supreme Court could play a pivotal role in the final outcome of the lawsuit that seeks to overturn the current districts.
