ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Highway Patrol is making improvements to its patrol vehicles to help prevent crashes.
WTSP reports big, bright decals in a diagonally striped pattern are being placed on the back bumper of every new FHP cruiser.
Car crashes are the number one killer of law enforcement officers on duty. Troopers hope the stripes will increase the awareness of motorists passing a trooper stopped along the side of the road.
Other new safety additions include black strips that will be placed over the vehicle's body and glow gold in headlights at night. The FHP is also adding a new light bar on top of the vehicles.
The cost of the changes is minimal. The new light bar is just slightly more expensive and the decals cost a few dollars.
