MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - A three car crash took the life of a young Naples woman, when the car she was riding in crashed into stopped traffic on Interstate 75 Monday.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, southbound traffic was backed up on the interstate due to the damaged overpass at University Parkway Monday afternoon.
Troopers say that around 6:20pm near the State Road 70 exit (#217), a car driven by 19-year-old Nicholas Calton of Naples approached the stopped traffic but was unable to stop in time. Calton attempted to swerve into the median but struck another car before overturning into the median.
One of the passengers in the car, 19-year-old Mikayla Brandt of Naples, died in the crash. Calton and passenger Skylar Rhoden both suffered serious injuries.
Two people in the car that was rear ended suffered minor injuries, as did two people that were in another vehicle that the rear-ended car was pushed into.
Calton was cited for Careless Driving.
