TALLAHASSEE, TN (WTXL) – With cold weather heading into the area overnight, several shelters are opening their doors this evening.
With low temperatures forecast to drop to near or below 35 degrees for three or more hours, tonight, Thursday, Feb. 27, a team of area human service agencies, local government and the faith-based community will open the temporary cold night shelter.
Any adult male who needs temporary shelter from cold weather should report to The Shelter at 480 West Tennessee St. The Shelter will arrange for transportation to the temporary cold night shelter. The temporary cold night shelter is located at the Jacob Chapel Baptist Church, 2333 Lake Bradford Road. The cold night shelter is coordinated by The Shelter. It opens at 9 p.m. and remains open overnight, closing the following morning at 7 a.m.
The temporary cold night shelter is open to adult males only. Women and families with children are advised to proceed to The Shelter, located at 480 West Tennessee St.
StarMetro, the City of Tallahassee's mass transit system, will provide transportation between The Shelter on West Tennessee St. and the temporary location at Jacob Chapel Baptist Church, when open. One trip is scheduled, with departure from The Shelter at 9 p.m. Adult males must pre-register at the Shelter by 6:45 p.m.; no walk-ins at the cold night shelter will be allowed. A return trip to The Shelter from the temporary location departs the following morning at 7 a.m.
Volunteers from the local faith-based community continue to provide assistance at the Jacob Chapel Baptist Church location. Cots are being provided by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. Security is maintained by staff from The Shelter.
