City Commissioners vote against plan for homeless shelter

SARASOTA, Fla. -- During the Sarasota city meeting this week, commissioners surprised the audience when they unanimously voted against moving forward with a 'Come as you are Shelter.'

The city had been debating potential locations for months; but in a surprising turn of events, Commissioner Shannon Snyder brought up the notion of not moving forward with the concept, and other commissioners all agreed.

There is no word yet on whether the county still plans to proceed with building a new shelter to handle the growing homeless population in the area.

The proposed shelter was part of a 12-step plan, suggested by consultant Robert Marbut, who was hired by the county to help solve the homeless problem in the area.
