WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida deputy is dead after his patrol car crashed.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office reports that 40-year-old Joseph Robbins was found unresponsive in his marked cruiser Friday morning. Rescuers responded after someone heard the crash and called 911.

Robbins was extricated from the car and taken to a Winter Haven hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Robbins had been on duty at the time of the crash. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known, and deputies were seeking information from anyone who might have been a witness. No other vehicles seemed to be involved, and no other injuries were reported.

Robbins, a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's office, had received 14 commendations and 187 recognitions in his career.
