TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A bill seeking to lower the boom on loud music blaring from car stereos didn't strike a chord with the Florida Senate.
The measure (SB 634) failed on a 19-19 vote Friday after senators offered their opinions about being subjected to window-rattling music at stop lights.
The bill would make it a violation to crank a car stereo so much that the music can be "plainly audible" from 25 feet or more. The violation would carry a $30 fine.
The bill's supporters say loud car stereos are a common complaint to police departments in Florida. They said excessively loud music poses a safety risk because motorists can't hear oncoming emergency vehicles.
Opponents said loud music is nothing more than an annoyance endured for a short time at a stop light.
