TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of eight same-sex couples and LGBT rights organization, SAVE.
The suit is challenging the state of Florida's refusal to recognize the couples' marriages; which were performed in other states and recognized by the federal government.
one of the couples, Sloan Grimsley, a firefighter and her wife, Joyce Albu who are seeking protections for their children through this suit. The couple is concerned that if Grimsley was hurt in the line of duty, they would not receive the state's compensation that is offered to married couples.
