SARASOTA, Fla. (WTXL) - A Florida teen is in trouble after he asked a girl to prom using a message some students consider racist.
A Riverview student asked a girl to prom with this message "If I was black I'd be picking cotton. But I'm white so I'm picking you 4 prom."
Now the Sarasota school district is investigating.
Students at Riverview High School don't want riots, and they say this doesn't reflect on the school as a whole.
They hope this starts a conversation.
"This is a good thing to talk about, because you have to recognize something to change it and then you have to keep it that way," said Erin Williams, a Riverview High School student.
Officials have spoken with the teen and his parents.
The student has since apologized.
The school district has not announced whether he will face any disciplinary action.
