TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- In the wake of a tragedy, like the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, there is a shared sense of grief causing a community to come together. That's exactly what the FSU student body is doing Thursday night.

Sigma Delta Tau held a vigil outside the student union, sharing a moment of silence to honor the 17 victims killed, the injured and their families. Nikki Marsh, a sorority member, says "All the friends that I had contact with yesterday did make it out. T here's definitely family friends, friends of friends, that didn't make it out okay. But, I'm just trying to think the best of it at the worst times."

Marsh is one of 20 girls in the sorority who are alumni of Stoneman Douglas. They say it's still hard to believe something tragic could happen in a place they have so many happy memories. Many Florida state students have family and friends were attending Stoneman Douglas High School during the shooting. They say they won't visit their hometown of Parkland without remembering the tragic event.

17 balloons were released into the sky in memory of each student and teacher who lost their life in the shooting. Thursday's vigil is important because the FSU community has a lot of students who are personally affected by the tragedy and need comfort during this devastating time.
