Florida Senate Passes Disabled Children Bill; Moves to House

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Thousands more Florida children with intellectual disabilities would get state educational aid under legislation passed by the Florida Senate.

The bill (SB 672) passed unanimously Wednesday, and Senate President Andy Gardiner said he expects the House to pass identical legislation by the end of the week. That will send it to Gov. Rick Scott for a signature.

The bill increases funding from $55 million to $73 million for $10,000-per-year scholarships for children with autism, Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, starting as early as age 3. It's expected to increase recipients to 8,000.

The bill also named the program for Gardiner, who has made it his priority as Senate president. He has a son with Down syndrome, and his wife has been active in support groups for families with disabled children.
