TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In a historic vote for the Florida Legislature, the Senate is moving forward with the plan to legalize one strain of marijuana.

The Senate voted 36-3 to approve "Charlotte's Web," a low-THC strain of marijuana that has a substantially smaller intoxicating effect compared to other varieties, and has been shown to help treat seizures.

The bill would allow doctors to prescribe a converted liquid form of the Charlotte's Web strain, to be used by patients with epilepsy and other seizure-inducing ailments.

The vote marks the first time a chamber of the Florida Legislature has approve medical marijuana in any form.  The House currently has a similar bill waiting for approval.
