ST. MARKS, Fla.(WTXL)--The celebration of Florida's 500th anniversary continues.

Saturday the Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner and Justin Riney who is paddle boarding around Florida visited the St. Marks lighthouse, highlighting the importance of preserving coastal waters and historic sites. The department of state is heading up VIVA Florida 500, promoting the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's arrival to Florida's coast. Detzner says the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge has a special place in his heart.

"When I was in college at FSU I used to ride my bicycle down here and and sit on the ledge at the light house and dream about one day owning a motor boat and navigating the St. Marks River and today I own a boat. It took me forty years to do that," said Detzner.

Justin Riney's paddle boarding journey is called Expedition Florida 500. Click here to learn more.
