Florida Man Loses Hand in Fireworks Explosion

Posted

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a man lost his right hand while ringing in the New Year in Daytona Beach Shores.

Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris says 35-year-old Gene Hartwell was injured by the explosion around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Hartwell walked to his house and called 911. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Marris says responders were only able to find some pieces of his hand.

Volusia County Sheriff's officials are investigating the accident and will determine whether Hartwell will face charges because it's illegal to shoot fireworks on the county's beaches.
