TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Legislature is now divided over how to draw a new map for congressional districts.
A Senate panel on Monday voted in favor of a map that would overhaul the political landscape of the state. But senators voted to alter districts in Hillsborough County and central Florida at the urging of Sen. Tom Lee.
Lee pushed for the change in an effort to reduce the number of districts in Hillsborough. But it puts the House and Senate on a collision course with days left in a special session.
The House is expected to pass a map on Tuesday that does not include the changes.
The two rival versions, however, would still likely lead to the defeat of several incumbent members of Congress.
The Legislature is holding a special session to draw up a new map because the state Supreme Court ruled the current map is unconstitutional.
