Florida Legislature Approves Online Voter Registration

TALLAHASSEE, FL. (AP) - Floridians could be allowed to register to vote online, although Gov. Rick Scott may scuttle the plan.

The Florida Legislature on Wednesday sent a bill to Scott that requires online voter registration to be in place by October 2017. The Senate approved the bill by a 37-3 vote.

But the top election official who works for Scott has come out against the proposed bill (SB 228), so the Republican governor may veto the legislation.

If Scott signs the bill into law, Florida would join 20 other states that already offer registration online.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner testified this session that he's worried that something could go wrong if the state moves ahead too quickly with online registration. He said he was worried the "forces of evil" would sabotage the state's system.

Legislators contend the state has enough time to put it in place successfully.
