Florida Legislature Approves Money for Two FAMU Buildings

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Florida Legislature has approved several items FAMU says will help, "...enhance the University's capacity for academic excellence."

According to Florida A&M University, $6.2 million will go to a new student affairs building and another $1.4 million will go to complete the FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences building.

The new student affairs building will house a variety of student centered departments including Recruitment, Admissions, Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar, Student Accounts, the Center for Disability Access and Resources, and the Undergraduate Student Success Center, according to the University.

In a statement President Elmira Mangum said, "We are extremely thankful to the Florida Legislature for their support, and for helping us provide our students with a 21st century living and learning environment. The funding will help us offer the kind of supportive services that our students deserve and need in regards to completing their degree programs on time."

The Pharmacy building is expected to be finished in 2016. It will house research and laboratory space which according to FAMU will create additional jobs funded through grants the new facilities will help secure.
