TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Christmas tree is often the cornerstone of a family's holiday decorations. But if not properly taken care of it can become a dangerous fire hazard.
There is an average of 210 Christmas tree related fires every year, resulting in an average of 6 deaths, 16 injuries and more than $16 million in damages.
The Florida Fire Marshall's Office demonstrated just how quickly a tree can be engulfed in flames.
Fire prevention specialist Todd Pierce says making sure the public is educated is a top priority when trying to prevent these fires.
"We can educate you on some of the little small things to look for, it can could help keep your holiday season safe. It prevents loss of life, loss of property, and then everybody is going to be happier."
Some tips to keep in mind are to be sure to have a 3 foot clearance of open space around your tree and don't forget to water it daily.
