TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Department of Children and Families is teaming up with Healthy Families Florida to make safer sleep environments for babies.

The department says that more than 100 babies died in Florida last year as a result of unsafe sleep practices, which is the leading cause of preventable infant death in the state.

DCF, along with Healthy Families Florida, hope to provide "Sleep Sacks," so a baby's face is never covered while sleeping.

DCF says that it's safer for babies than using loose blankets that are designed for older children and adults.

DCF press secretary Michelle Glady says these are safer that blankets, which she says is seen as a safety hazard: “Blankets cause a suffocation hazard, and unsafe sleep practices are a leading cause of infant death in our state. So, it’s a priority of ours at the department to promote safe sleep practices.”
