TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - Qualifying for candidates to run for offices across the state started Monday and continues until noon Friday.
The most-prominent candidates will qualify in the race for governor, where Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and Congressman Ron DeSantis are squaring off for the Republican nomination, and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, former U.S. Representative Gwen Graham, businessmen Jeff Greene and Chris King and former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine are seeking the Democratic nomination.
Levine filed his qualifying papers in person Monday.
“I’ve lived the American Dream. I started from nothing, built some companies from scratch, and became a successful two-term mayor," said Levine. "I think what people are looking for is folks that come from a different background and then go into government, as opposed to making government your entire life.”
Others qualifying will include candidates for agriculture commissioner, attorney general, state chief financial officer and more than 140 legislative seats. Democrat Michael Grieco is running for an open House seat in Miami-Dade County.
“We feel very good about where we are. We are looking forward to moving forward," said Grieco. "I mean, absentee ballots go out in just a few weeks. It sneaks up on you pretty quickly.”
Florida’s primary election will be held Tuesday, August 28th, with the general election on November 6th.
