Anglers chasing one of the world's most sought-after game fish, the Florida tarpon, must catch and release them after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved new rules on Wednesday.

The commission said that possession of a single tarpon when in pursuit of an International Game Fish Association record is allowable, but limited to one fish per person.

Tarpon can no longer be weighed but can be photographed during a catch. Fish larger than 40 inches must remain in the water at all times due to risk of injury.

The FWC also eliminated a permit that allowed bonefish to be transported and weighed during a tournament.

Neither fish is considered to have value as food.

The more stringent rules will begin on September 1.
