TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida lawmakers are closing in on a final vote to shut down the state's internet cafes.
The Florida Senate is scheduled to take up Thursday a measure that would ban the storefront operations. The legislation could also put senior arcades out of business.
Senate President Don Gaetz said he wants to send the bill to Gov. Rick Scott this week.
The Legislature is feeling pressure to act after an investigation into the Allied Veterans of the World charity. It was accused of running a $290 million illegal gambling business that directed most of the proceeds into its owners' pockets.
The investigation also prompted Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll to resign after she was questioned about consulting work she did for Allied. She has been not been accused of any wrongdoing.
