SANFORD, FL (WWSB) - "It's this little device right here that will set off an alarm when criminals open the pump."
Chris Gilpin invented his "gas pump sentry" six months ago--and says his new product will help "get results" by preventing people from falling victim to skimmers stealing your credit and debit card information.
"If we can't stop these criminals from installing gas station skimmers, (we can) at least pin point when the skimmer is installed," Gilpin says.
This device is put inside the gas station, and when the pump is pried open--the alarm goes off, alerting employees which pump was compromised.
The system also sends out an alert through an app.
According to the Department of Agriculture, in Florida nearly 300 skimmers were found on pumps since the beginning of the year.
Gilpin says installing his device locally is already in the works.
"We know paying at the pump is not going to change. We need to know gas stations are doing more to protect our financial information," he says.
Starting August 1, gas stations in your area could be protected by this new system.
