TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Lawmakers are trying to cut down on animal over population. House leaders passed a measure today that requires animal shelters and agencies to make their records public.
Right now lawmakers say shelters across the nation care for more than six million dogs and cats and every year and half of them are euthanized because of health issues, behavioral issues or lack of space.
The bill sponsor Travis Cummings says they're concerned about how many animals are euthanized and where the animals are coming from.
Cummings says right now its very difficult to get information and records from animal shelters and agencies throughout the state.
This measure however would require them report the number of animals they euthanize and the care provided.
"This will really expand upon that an allow us to truly identify how much we've approved in that area and hopefully put measures in that would allow us to take it to higher levels and find good homes for all of our animals," said Rep. Travis Cummings, District 18 of Orange Park, Fl.
Cummings says while there are a number of the shelters and agencies reporting what happens to animals in their facilities, there are many who do not.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
