TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--A bill to ban texting while driving is on the move after a Florida Senate subcommittee passed the measure unanimously Wednesday.
The Communications, energy, and public utilities subcommittee meeting was packed with tons of supporters as senator Nancy Detert.
This is the fourth time senator Detert is pushing to get this bill passed.
The measure would prohibit use of any wireless device while your vehicle is in "motion."
However; if you're at a stop light you are permitted to use those devices. Senator Detert said it would be a secondary offense.
For example, a police officer would have to stop you for another reason "first" and if they believe you had been texting while driving you'll then receive a citation.
Detert said the bill has a better chance to pass this year.
"This year's speaker i think will at least allow his chamber to speak and representative holder is a very good bill sponsor and i think he's going to do a good job and i think we have a good chance in the house and the senate," said Detert.
The bill still has more committee stops before its ready for a floor vote in both the house and the senate.
