TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida's first lady marked the beginning of the 5th annual Summer Literacy Program at the Governor's mansion.

The program is encouraging students to read throughout the summer.

Nearly 70 elementary students from Astoria Park Elementary School in Leon County and Galloway Charter Academy in Gadsden County, gathered at the mansion today to hear First Lady Ann Scott read the children's book "The Day the Crayons Quit."

The First Lady says the initiative is so important, because research shows children who do not read during the summer can lose a month or more of progress made during the school year.
