ADEL, Ga.-- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s GCIC Division is increasing the cost of background checks on weapons carry licenses, known as firearm permits. The rate increase is set to take effect on March 1, 2013.

Cook County Probate Court Judge Chase Daughtrey says the license will cost citizens an extra $7.00 starting next month.

“In Georgia, the County Probate Court Judge does not set the price of the Weapons Carry License. The $30 Application Fee and the $5 Fingerprint Fee is set by the General Assembly. The price of the background check is set by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's GCIC Division and it is $37.25. The GBI sent us a bulletin stating they would be increasing the cost of the background checks to $44.25. Effective March 1, the new cost will be $79.25.” said Daughtrey.

He says the price of the weapons carry license has gradually increased over the past four years. In 2009, the cost was $39.25 and with the price increase to $79.25 in March, applicants will have seen a 50% increase in the cost in that time frame.

Daughtrey says his office has issued 63 licenses in 2013 compared to 20 in 2012.
