EASTPOINT, Fla. (WTXL) - Franklin County Sheriff A.J. "Tony" Smith says he's never seen another fire like the one that struck Eastpoint on Sunday.
"Probably one of the most intense fires I've ever seen in my career with how quickly it moved and how quickly it destroyed homes," he said. "People were actually fleeing out the door with the clothes on their back."
Crews are investigating the cause of the Lime Rock Wildfire in Franklin County while others are providing relief for those in need.
The fire involved 950 acres and is 95 percent contained, officials said.
"Franklin County is the county that shows up and takes care of it's citizens, but the state is going to do the same thing also," Gov. Rick Scott said.
The shelters are busy with providing food and other essentials to people who fled their homes.
Christy Russell says she's not sure when she can return home. "I want to go home, but I'm scared to go back and see what everything looks like," she said.
Fresh in Russell's memory is that terrifying moment when she knew her family and neighbors needed to leave their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
