TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida State University students, faculty and staff affected by Hurricane Michael can now apply for financial assistance through the two Seminole Emergency Relief Funds.

“As we resume our studies and campus life, many of our fellow Seminoles are still working to rebuild their lives following the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael,” said Florida State University President John Thrasher. “We understand the overwhelming challenges that many of our friends, including our students, faculty and staff throughout the Panhandle will continue to face. Let’s do what we can to help our folks get their lives back on track.”

Through the program, affected students, faculty and staff in need can receive up to $1,000 per calendar year. University officials estimate that as many as 15,000 students may have been affected by the storm.

Officials say the funds are intended to be a temporary life-preserver, not an income supplement or an alternative to insurance, FEMA or other types of aid.

Applications will be reviewed as received and applicants will be notified via email whether an application is accepted or denied.

For students, funds will be deposited into the bank account on record with Student Business Services. For faculty and staff, funds will be sent to the account on record with Payroll Services.

If you're applying for the grant, you need to provide documentation relevant to the need for assistance such as copies of bills, invoices and receipts or photographs of the damage.

The Seminole Emergency Relief Fund was created as a way for the FSU community to support students and colleagues who are experiencing a temporary hardship due to a significant life event, such as a sudden illness, family crisis or natural disaster.
