TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida)The Florida Highway Patrol will have an increased presence on interstates and major highways over the next two holiday weeks, focusing on aggressive drivers and those who are impaired by drugs or alcohol.

FHP is also joining other law enforcement agencies across the nation for the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign that runs through New Year’s Day.

All troopers, including those typically assigned to administrative duties, will be patrolling over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, with nearly six million Floridians driving more than 50 miles from home in the coming weeks.

Florida Highway Patrol statistics show there were more than 9,000 car accidents during the Christmas/New Year’s holiday travel period last year, including 106 deaths.

With Florida roadways expected to be very busy over the next two weeks, FHP Captain Tom Pikul said people need to follow all traffic laws and get plenty of rest before driving.

“The Florida Highway Patrol will be out in full force. We want to make sure that everyone sees the Florida Highway Patrol out there, with those Black and Tans on the roadway," said Pikul. "We want to be visible, so that encourages everyone to not only slow down but to be patient.”

Pikul said anyone who suspects they see a drunk driver on the road can call Star FHP (*FHP) so a trooper can be on the lookout for the car.
