TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Steinhatchee man is in critical condition after an early-morning car crash, according to Florida troopers.

The man, 46-year-old Stephen Reed, was involved in a single-vehicle crash on County Road 361 in Taylor County. The incident happened on Wednesday, April 24, around 2:12 a.m.

Reed was reportedly traveling north on CR 361 when his 2001 Ford Truck veered off the road for unknown reasons. After entering the west shoulder, the truck struck a palm tree head-on. The vehicle then careened down an embankment, overturned, and entered the Steinhatchee River. The Ford struck a wooded dock, coming to a final rest upside-down in the water.

Troopers responded to the scene with Taylor County EMS workers Taylor County Fire Rescue.

According to officials, Reed wasn't wearing his seat belt, and it's unknown if the collision was related to drugs or alcohol. Charges are pending.
