FHP increasing presence over weekend

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - The Florida Highway Patrol will be out in extra numbers this weekend ahead of the Independence Day holiday on Wednesday.

Troopers will be making sure those driving during one of the summer's busiest travel weeks, get to and from their destinations safely.

They'll be focusing on speeders, aggressive drivers and those who are impaired by drugs or alcohol.

FHP Captain Tom Pikul's best advice for traveling is to leave in plenty of time, be patient and don't drive drunk.

"We will have troopers out there enforcing impaired driving laws," said Pikul. "Make sure you have a designated driver, or call a ride-share service if you have a drink."

According to FHP, there were more than 64,000 speeding tickets written last July, more than any other month in 2017.

Troopers also remind drivers to pay attention to the road and avoid texting while driving, which is just as dangerous as drunk driving.
