TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida troopers are investigating a Wednesday evening crash that resulted in the death of a local motorcyclist.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 20 (Blountstown Highway) and Silver Saddle Drive.

The two motorists involved were 25-year old Zachary T. Thomas, who was driving a Yama motorcycle, and  60-year-old Sarah Williams Battle, who was behind the wheel of an Acura.

Before the crash, troopers say Battle was traveling in the westbound left turn lane of Blountstown Highway. Thomas was in the eastbound lane.

Troopers say the collision occurred when Battle attempted to turn on Silver Saddle Drive and ended up in the path of Thomas' oncoming vehicle. Thomas reportedly tried to brake--even laying the motorcycle on its side in an attempt to stop the impending crash--but was unsuccessful. The crash caused Thomas' vehicle to spin into the middle of the intersection before coming to a stop.

Officials from Leon County Sheriff's Office, Leon County, and Fire Rescue responded, and Thomas was taken to the hospital. He later died as a result of his injuries.

No injuries were reported for Battle. She was reportedly wearing a seat belt, but troopers are not disclosing whether or not Thomas was wearing a helmet.

Troopers say alcohol was not a factor in the cause of the crash, but the incident is still under investigation.
