ATLANTA (AP) - Federal officials say they've reached an extension agreement with the state of Georgia to improve services for people with developmental disabilities.
Officials from the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement Wednesday that the extension agreement comes after a 2010 settlement in a federal lawsuit over Georgia forcing disabled people into state-run hospitals rather than providing community-based services.
Officials say the Department of Justice in January found that Georgia was not in compliance with the 2010 agreement but state officials have agreed to help move people from hospitals to community-based settings, monitor their health and wellbeing, create at least 675 new Medicaid home and community based support slots and more.
Officials say the agreement enhances the state's oversight and will help at least 633 people receive housing vouchers.
