MIAMI (AP) — A new law enforcement crackdown on timeshare resale and travel fraud is being detailed in Miami by federal and state law enforcement officials.
The Miami U.S. attorney's office says a news conference is scheduled Thursday to discuss the issue. Among those attending will be a top Federal Trade Commission official, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer.
Officials say some 190 actions have been brought recently by the FTC and other law enforcement agencies in the area of timeshare fraud. Some of these cases involve people and investigators in other countries.
Florida is known as the nation's center of timeshare resale fraud. The cases often involve telemarketers who claim to have buyers for timeshares but demand thousands of dollars in upfront payments. The buyers usually don't exist.
