Feds Examine U of New Mexico Sex-Assault Policy

Posted

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the University of New Mexico's handling of reported sexual assaults and sexual harassment of students.

The investigation, announced Friday, is the latest effort by the Justice Department to change the way colleges around the country respond to allegations of sexual assaults and sexual harassment.

Under the review, federal officials will evaluate the university's policies and practices for preventing sexual assault and sexual harassment.

School officials said they are aware of the investigation and will cooperate with federal officials.

Earlier this year, Montana state colleges adopted new federal guidelines meant to protect students from sexual assault following a 2013 settlement between the Justice Department and the University of Montana.

The University of Connecticut also unveiled new initiatives this year following a federal investigation.
