TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Whether you're vacationing on Florida's beaches or gathering in the backyard with family and friends, the Florida Department of Health reminds residents to protect their skin as rays begin to bear down on the Sunshine State.

Experts recommend using sunscreen with a sun protectant factor, or SPF, of at least 15.

They also recommend seeking out shade whenever possible to avoid ultraviolet rays. Excessive exposure to UV, rays both organic and artificial can come with serious health implications.

"Well, we look at skin cancer, that's the one big thing that can come from not protecting yourself against the sun. There's basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, which are cureable, treatable, but there's melanoma, which is less common but can be deadly," said Christopher Tittel. "It can be a particularly sever form of skin cancer.  We don't want anybody to get any forms of skin cancer, which is why we encourage preventative measures."

And while some may find it too hot to handle, experts also recommend wearing long pants and sleeves for added protection.
