TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that they have arrested an employee for buying cellphones for himself and his family using the department's contract, costing the agency nearly $5,000.

Inspectors with the Florida Department arrested FDLE government operations consultant John Leland Goelz on charges of grand theft and organized scheme to defraud.

They believe that while he was the agency’s mobile device consultant, he purchased cell phones for himself and his family using FDLE’s mobile device contract.

The agency began investigating him after a member reported not being able to get an older cellphone upgraded. As part of the contract, FDLE says that they are allotted a specific number of upgrades for a discounted rate each year.

They said that Goelz bought 10 mobile devices for his personal use that should have been used to upgrade FDLE member phones.

Using the contract to get steep discounts, officials said Goelz cost the agency nearly $5,000.

The department is in the process of reworking their procedures to ensure not changes are made again without supervisor approval.

They said that Goelz, who was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Leon County Jail, is in the process of being terminated from FDLE.
