TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finalized two rules Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014 that require calorie information to be listed in various venues, including on menus and menu boards in chain restaurants. The rules are required by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The FDA says its necessary for this information to be available since Americans eat about one-third of their calories away from home.

The rule also applies to retail food establishments, vending machines with 20 or more locations, movie theaters and amusement parks.

Some states already have the rules in place, but now they will take effect nationwide.

The menu labeling final rule also now includes certain alcoholic beverages.

Restaurants have one year to comply with the requirements. Vending machines will have two years.
