TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The partial federal government shutdown is impacting hundreds of federal employees in Tallahassee.
Ray Coleman, Jr., the president of the local labor union representing 200 of Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Tallahassee's employees said they're understaffed as it is.
Coleman, Jr. sent WTXL a recording of an automated message he and other employees received regarding the shutdown. In part, it said, "All leave will be cancelled, and all staff are required to report to their assigned shifts and posts. Failure to follow this directive may result in staff being referred for disciplinary action."
He said they're already working mandated shifts of 16 hours or more -- and now, they'll continue that without knowing if or when they'll get paid for their work.
The messages they've received indicate possible punishment for not showing up to work -- in the days leading up to Christmas.
The labor union president tells WTXL the people he represents "who work hard to keep this community safe don't deserve this."
