VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - Valdosta High School and Lowndes High School fans are gearing up for one of the biggest games of the year for the two teams, the Winnersville Classic. Kick-off for the big rivalry game is Friday, October 30, 2015 at 8:00 p.m.
Before the teams take the field, football fans are preparing for the game with the 7th annual Winnersville Classic Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament pits alumni from both teams against each other and helps raise money for both schools.
This year, the goal was to raise $20,000 for the two school systems. In the 6 previous years, the tournament has brought in about $70,000.
Participants say it's a friendly competition to help them get ready for the football game.
"This is a wonderful week for our community and it just kind of brings all of the true Winnersville spirit out and so that was kind of where it all kind of birthed," said Valdosta Wildcats Captain Justin Martin.
Lowndes Vikings Captain Jeremy Davis responded, saying, "Golf is something that we all enjoy and Winnersville week creates a lot of pride from each side. That competitive spirit, but also in the spirit of unity behind the community."
Tickets to the game are now sold out.
