TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A group of students from Florida A&M University took a trip across the big pond to learn all about "health care systems" in other countries while helping others.

Close to 40 students, mostly from the "College of Pharmacy" spent their spring break in Dubai and South Africa.

These students enjoyed their spring break but they also made an impact on the world and a difference in South African communities.

"In short it gives us the opportunity through the various partnerships to do internships and do a lot of research," said James Moran, the director of career development services. "We had the opportunity to conduct two health fairs while we were."

James Moran took the trip with the students as part of a global initiative and for the center of health equity that was formed in 2012. Students had the opportunity to study healthcare systems. Moran says the students, pharmacists, and professors reached hundreds of people at the health fairs in Soweto, a township in Johannesberg.

"Many of the individuals in the township were not aware of their health status we had an opportunity to check their BMI their weight as well as their glucose levels, diabetes also runs rapid there," said Moran.

The students also visited the Orlando Children's Home. Moran says they adopted the orphanage last year, donating funding for food and clothing.

"It's about 60 children ages 5 months to 18 or 19 many of those students have been misplaced because of the passing of their families to HIV/AIDS which are prevalent in that area," said Moran.

Moran is proud of the FAMU students, saying their work abroad doesn't go unnoticed.

Dr. James Moran looks forward to the next delegation of students to embark on the "Cultural Immersion Trip".
