FAMU President Mangum honors Maya Angelou

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) Florida A&M University President Elmira Mangum is honoring poet Maya Angelou, who passed away Wednesday.

President Mangum released a statement celebrating Angelou's life, and her contributions throughout the decades.

“Florida A&M University joins the nation in mourning the loss of Dr. Maya Angelou," said Mangum.

"She demonstrated that life is an evolving journey and she expressed this well in her life as a poet, activist, college professor, Tony-nominated actress, mother and friend of the world. Her interpretation of the human condition will forever live on in her numerous poems and books. We salute this phenomenal woman and her enduring legacy."

Maya Angelou spoke at FAMU in 2011, during an installment of the university's Lyceum series.  Angelou passed away Wednesday at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C.  She was 86.
