TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - Monday afternoon a major announcement was made on The Florida A&M University campus in regards to FAMU athletics.

FAMU President Dr. Elmira Mangum called for a 3:30 press conference to announce the resignation of newly appointed athletic director Kellen Winslow. Mangum said, in his resignation letter he sent to her Sunday night, he wanted to explore other opportunities.

During the press conference Mangum named former athletic director Nelson Townsend as the interim athletic director. Townsend is no stranger to the position working most of his career in athletics. He currently sits on the coaches election committee and will continue to oversee the coaches search. Townsend says, a new head football coach will be named by Wednesday and that he has narrowed the search to three candidates.

Much of the fall out with Winslow stemmed from the way he handled the firing of former head football coach Earl Holmes. Holmes was let go during Homecoming week, which angered many in the Rattler community.

With the announcement of a new coach expected this week, faculty, staff, students and alumni are excited and looking forward to moving on.
