TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- All July, it is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, and Friday morning, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU)'s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences presented the "2nd Annual Mental Health Symposium."

The theme: Improving Mental Health for Minority Youth - Bridging the Gap in Disparities. The symposium featured two separate panels discussing the reach of youth mental health awareness, as well as resources that local youth could tap into if they needed help.

It was highlighted by mental health advocate Aeron Brown, and his experiences coping with depression and fighting his way out of it. He says sympathy and understanding are important steps to helping loved ones who suffer from mental illness.

When asked about how important awareness and understanding is, Brown said, "You fear what you don't know. So people cast a judgement or a shadow on something they don't really understand and it'll be very far off from the truth. Do your homework. Don't just jump to conclusions about what you might have heard."

The panels involved included experts from FAMU Psychology, and local specialists of pharmacy and counseling.
