TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It was all about honoring minority students at Florida A&M Univeristy.

On Sunday, the Aquilina Howell Foundation recognized local minority high school graduates for their academic success and service to the community.

Delaitre Hollinger of the National Associaton for the Preservation of African American History and Culture participated in the program.

"When we see the students awarded their checks we hope that everyone feels a sense of pride that we're giving back to the community and continuing the legacy of Aquilina Howell," Hollinger said.

The scholarship is dedicated in honor of Aquilina Howell, the first woman to serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Leon County. Howell played a major role in the desegregation of the local school system.

The Aquilina Howell Foundation presented three 2017 scholarship recipients with checks and former recipients were also recognized. Many members from the community congratulated the recipients.

After the award presentation, guest speakers held a panel discussion about the evolutions of African Americans, education and civil rights.
